In collaboration with 7th Gear, we were tasked with beautifying the functionality of a scientific calculator specifically built for the iPad and iPhone. Our goal was to make it visually appealing so that users would be immediately attracted to it and then could jump in and realize just how powerful the tool is.
Before we even got into design, we spent weeks making sure that our visual ideas would appeal to the calculator's audience while not interfering with the functions the developers needed. This calculator is built for the basic user as well as for the scientist requiring a fully-functioning scientific calculator with complex commands.
The primary selling point to this calculator was the inclusion of a "function line" which essentially presents its user with all input data up to the submission action (pressing 'enter'). For example, prior to 7th Gear, there were very few if any solid calculator iOS apps that showed the user 2 + 2 + 4 = 8 on the screen in succession. Instead most apps just calculated the function and displayed a result upon selecting 'equal.'
We came up with our visual concept, and proceeded through wireframing, weeks of layout and structure planning. We determined how things were going to flow, how information would be inputted and how results would appear. Our collaboration with 7th Gear allowed us to make sure the calculator looked nice while providing what they were looking to achieve.
