Putting Our Twist On Audio
Recording a Master of Horror
In 2019 we received a call from none other than M. Night Shyamalan’s production company. We were promptly hired to record ADR (Automatic Dialogue Replacement - the process of re-recording lines of dialogue in-studio because of a noisy production set, change in performance, or change in story) for their upcoming psychological horror series, Servant, and sworn to secrecy. Servant was to be one of the flagship shows for the yet-to-be-launched Apple TV+, and naturally, Shyamalan wanted to keep details close to the vest. We were happy to oblige.
Actor Boris McGiver (Uncle George) arrived and recorded several cues over several episodes of the series. We connected virtually with Shyamalan along with his crew from our studio, where he and others directed Boris through the cues as we handled the audio. Cool doesn’t even begin to describe it. The session went so well, Apple later brought in actress Lauren Ambrose to record several episodes of her cues.
In 2020, Servant was nominated for an MPSE Golden Reel award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing - Sound Effects, Foley, Music, Dialogue, and ADR for Live Action Broadcast Media Under 35 Minutes.
