Navigating Toward Simplicity: A Strategic Redesign for Parks & Trails New York

Background

Reimagining PTNY’s Digital Future

Parks & Trails New York (PTNY), the state’s leading advocate for outdoor access and trail development, needed a website that could reflect its impact, serve its diverse audiences, and streamline operations. Their existing site was outdated, difficult to navigate, and lacked a clear content strategy—making it hard for both new visitors and longtime users to engage effectively. Maps were buried, donation options were under-optimized, and content management was inefficient for a small nonprofit team. With their 40th anniversary approaching, PTNY needed a refreshed digital experience that could modernize their presence, simplify access to key resources, and drive deeper engagement across the board.

A Platform with Purpose

Overit proposed a modern, intuitive, and mission-aligned redesign that would transform PTNY’s website into both a functional tool and a compelling advocacy platform. The strategy focused on clean navigation, flexible page templates, and deeply integrated mapping features using GIS to showcase their signature trails and resources. The design would draw inspiration from environmental organizations like American Forests and The Nature Conservancy—capturing the spirit of the outdoors while prioritizing accessibility and conversion. The goal was to engage newcomers, support professionals, and make it easier than ever to give, volunteer, and take action—all from a unified digital experience.

Function Meets Flow

Using a custom WordPress build and modern base theme, Overit designed the site in phases—starting with key templates like the homepage, blog, and event calendar. A simplified menu structure aligned with PTNY’s proposed architecture ensured clear pathways for both everyday users and first-time visitors. The team engineered flexible layouts for storytelling, reports, and event promotion, and integrated GIS-powered maps to elevate interactivity across the Empire State Trail, Erie Canalway, and more. Donation prompts were embedded across pages, and a user-friendly CMS empowered the PTNY team to load, update, and manage content with ease. Overit also ensured mobile optimization, SEO readiness, and ADA accessibility were baked in from day one.

Clear Paths, Measurable Progress

Parks & Trails NY now has a future-ready website that’s as mission-driven and user-focused as the work they do across New York State. Visitors can now find events, maps, and advocacy tools in fewer clicks, while mobile users benefit from faster, more accessible browsing. The integration of dynamic GIS maps turns the site into a true planning resource for outdoor enthusiasts and trail professionals alike. Internally, PTNY’s team can update the site without technical assistance—saving time and boosting efficiency. Most importantly, the redesigned platform sets the stage for the organization’s 40th anniversary by amplifying visibility, increasing donations, and making it easier than ever to support parks, people, and progress.
